SuperGold Plunger Pump Packing

SuperGold® 858

Following the success of SuperGold® plunger packing, UTEX has expanded SuperGold technology to work with UPAK® Injectable Pump & Valve Sealant. UPAK100 SuperGold

The newest innovation in SuperGold technology is the combination of UPAK and SuperGold. UPAK 100 SuperGold has proven to be sucessful as an injectable sealant in centrifugal pumps for Drilling, Production, and Well Servicing–and now also plunger pumps. UPAK®100 SuperGold® meets extreme conditions typically encountered in the oilfield.

The next generation of plunger pump packing

Lasts up to four times longer without lubrication! Developed specifically for use in plunger pumps, SuperGold® 858 is a non-adjustable molded packing that does not require lubrication in most services. SuperGold® 858 is an improvement of the patented UTEX J-Design 838 packing. It delivers a longer life than 838 when not lubricated, tolerates higher temperatures and pressures, provides the same resistance to over tightening, and is as readily available in the marketplace. SuperGold® 858 can save time and money in your plant by eliminating the need for lubrication and frequent packing replacement. And it can be substituted for UTEX J-Design 838 or similar packings with little or no pump modification.

Longer life under extreme conditions.

SuperGold® 858 is made with a high temperature resistant nitrile and a strong aramid fabric/modified elastoplast composite jacket. A special low-friction enhancement is compounded into the elastoplast binder to improve its performance without lubrication. The seal rings are typically backed up with hard, modified glass-reinforced polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) adapters. SuperGold® 858 has been successfully used at temperatures up to 180°F (82°C) and at pressures up to 2200 psi (151 bars). Laboratory tests indicate it can be used at 250°F (121°C), 2500 psi (172 bars) without lubrication, or 300°F (148°C) and 5,000 psi (345 bars) with lubrication. Lubrication can be continued if desired. While the life of SuperGold® 858 packing without lubrication is far longer than standard un-lubricated packings, using lubrication with SuperGold 858 will extend its performance substantially.

High performance laboratory tests show SuperGold 858 has longer packing life

In laboratory material tests, SuperGold® 858 was compared to UTEX 838 based on the material compositions. The chart below shows the results. A laboratory pump test was performed comparing SuperGold® 858 to UTEX 838. All tests were performed using a 45 hp triplex plunger pump operating at 400 spm with a 2˝ inch stroke operating at 2200 psi (151 bars) pumping a high mineral content water. Tests were performed with a two-unit assembly with no external lubrication. On the average, the SuperGold® 858 lasted 231 percent longer than the UTEX 838.

Figure 1
supergoldj-design858 SuperGold® J-Design 858 is available is three basic assembly configurations. The first configuration has three pressure rings as shown to in Figure 1 and is a direct conversion from the older style 838. This configuration is designed for use with packing lubrication.
Figure 2
non-lubricatedsupergold In non-lubricated assemblies or in assemblies using an outside drip lubrication system, UTEX recommends using fewer packing rings. The extra packing space should be filled with a metal bushing, as in Figure 2. The bushing may be supplied by either the customer or UTEX.
Figure 3
singlebushing In some assemblies, a single metal bushing may be used to replace a packing ring and a metal lantern ring, as in Figure 3. The replacement bushing is available from UTEX or may be provided by the customer.
